Birds on a Farm
Birds are probably the most common farm animals, and unlike most farm animals, they are not limited to farm life. Chicken have become a common backyard pet for families. In addition, all types of birds on the farm can produce eggs and therefore provide an alternative to store bought eggs to those working in the Nature Area as well as to those who choose to keep birds for themselves.

The farm has a variety of different chicken breeds, including but not limited to the Orpington, the Australorp, and the Ameraucana. The chickens on the farm represent a diverse range of combs, wattles, and color patters. In addition, the chickens produce eggs ranging from blue-green to white to dark brown in color.

A variety of heritage geese, ducks, chickens, and turkeys live on the farm; all are very good egg-layers. Chicks are hatched every spring. During the day, the chickens are free to roam the farm and go wherever they like. When the Red Barn closes, all the fowl are gathered and put inside to keep them safe from night-time predators.
